Houston's Network Marketing NO "Pitch" Skills Training

The First Skill All New Distributors Should Be Taught.

Here are the notes from James Trower’s training at the Houston Network Marketing Meetup July 07, 2011

There is a huge difference between Needs and Wants.

exerciseEveryone Needs to go to the Dentist every 6 months, but do we Want to? NO!
Everyone Needs to get up an hour earlier and Exercise, but do we Want to? NO!
Everyone Needs to watch their Diet and eat healthier foods but do we Want to? NO!
Everyone Needs to pay Taxes, but do we Want to? NO!

So it’s perfectly normal for people to Need things, but not Want them.

And when you get home you’re going to find out that your family, friends and co-workers are perfectly normal.

When you get home you’re going to be listening to a relative complaining about……….
And at some point you’re going to ask them “would you like to do something about it?”no

And they’re going to say things like, I am under a doctor’s care, I am allergic to all liquids, powers, and pills, I’ve tried everything and nothing works for me. All these excuses are “code” for NO!

You know that your relative Needs your product or service but doesn’t Want it and that’s perfectly normal. Your business is only with the people who Want it.

complainWhen you get to work your going to hear your co-worker complaining about not having enough money for………………….
And at some point you’re going to ask them “would you like to do something about it?”

And they’re going to say things like, I don’t know anyone, I am not a sales man, that’s a pyramid, I am only 45 years away from retirement. All these excuses are “code” for NO!

You know that your co-works Needs your opportunity, Needs the extra money but they don’t want it and that’s perfectly normal. Your business is only with the people who Want it.

    Restaurant

It’s like owning a restaurant. What’s your favorite restaurant? (XYZ). Do you think everyone should try the food at XYZ’s Restaurant at least once? (Yes). Does everyone Want to? NO, for what every reason 99% of the people in (Your town) do not go to XYZ’s Restaurant, but does XYZ’s Restaurant have a great business with the 1% that does? Absolutely, you see XYZ’s Restaurant understands that their business is only with the people that want to go there.

    BOB bob
Imagine you have a job looking for people named Bob, and you walked up to me and said "hey James what’s your name" and I say "James".  Then you say "wouldn’t you like to be a Bob.  My life would be a lot easier if you where a Bob.  You look like a Bob. Do you feel like a Bob?  You can sign this application and change your name to Bob. Would you please be a Bob!"

Would you do that? NO, you would simply go find someone else and ask them if their name is Bob. And if you where really smart you’d ask them do you know anyone named Bob. Our business is only with the Bob’s of the world.

shieldThis story will help shield your new distributor from what’s going to happen when people say NO who shouldn’t.

So when someone says NO to them instead of them feeling rejected and wanting to quit they will understand that it’s perfectly normal for people to Need things but not Want them.

Not everyone who Needs our products and services is going to Want them and that is perfectly normal. Our business is only with the people that Want to.

A HUGE thanks to Tom "Big Al" Schreiter for teaching us the skills for success and encouraging us to pass them on. Thanks to the members of the  Houston Network Marketing Meetup Group for your support and interest in learning the skills to build your business and for passing those skills on to your teams.

Thanks to those who came and participated in our monthly generic workshop in March.  The discussion was on time management.

I told you all I would provide the information presented and apologize for taking so long to get to it.

The only resources we have are time and money…. Until we have earned enough to hire someone to do the busy work, then we have to learn to manage our time effectively.

Effective vs. Efficient – Effectiveness  is doing the right job right.  Efficiency is simply doing some job right. (There is a world of difference)

A quality networking marketing internet business must have an amazing time management plan for it to be successful.

How much time DO WE HAVE per day to build our business?

When helping your partners find time in their day, remember our coloring exercise.  Here is the template we worked from:
http://houstonnetworkmarketing.com/hnm/doc/15min-glance.pdf   Help your biz partner isolate even 15 minute slots they did not realize they had.  We can do A LOT in 15 minutes, read, listen, make a follow-up call, get something prepared for mailing, etc….. We can’t eliminate excuses though, we can only help them see their day in a different light.

We talked about the different time management personalities.  Here is the link to that document:  http://sbinfocanada.about.com/cs/timemanagement/a/timetypes.htm

Strategies for mastering your productivity with email

including the link to http://lessemailsplease.com to send to your "pass this on" email fanatic friends.

There is ONE thing I do NOT recommend as suggested in the article.  I DO NOT recommend Boxbe.  Boxbe is the best way I know to LOCK your email out of receiving emails from friends, clients, prospects, etc….. and is, in my books, as devastating to your business as a trojan virus on your computer.

When planning our activities for building our business:
What is the pay off for what I am doing right now?

    1. Important and urgent
    2. Urgent but not important
    3. Neither

Zero or negative value activities as:
    1.      Worry
    2.      Making up excuses or reasons why things aren’t working
    3.      Idle chatter
    4.      Surfing the internet
    5.      Checking email
    6.      Instant messaging
    7.  Going into Convince mode when prospecting

    Low Value Activities
    1.      Attending “same old” company trainings and meetings
    2.      Errands for businesses
    3.      Repetitive/Administrative work
    4. Getting ready to get ready

    High value activities –
    1.      Generating your leads and following up with them
    2.      Creating your ad copy or marketing
    3.      Talking with prospects.

Prospect, Connect, Repeat….. Prospect, Connect, Repeat…..

    8 Time wasters:

Eliminate Timewasters:  (HUGE issue- it is so easy to let these things suck up your time)

    a) Constantly checking email.
    b) Telephone interruptions – answering the phone EVEYRTIME it rings – let it go to voicemail !!
    c) Lack of Objectives – not knowing what our real goal or objective is
    d) Crisis Management – the fireman syndrome
    e) Attempting too much at once – learn to break big projects up into smaller ones
    f) Personal disorganization –
    g) Procrastination
    h) Lacking the ability to say no – Know your limitations – we cannot do everything

Causes of procrastinationThe essence of procrastination is very well reflected in this quote by Bernard Meltzer: "Hard work is often the easy work you did not do at the proper time."

What are typical reasons why you procrastinate? Here are a few of the most common situations to consider in your anti procrastination efforts.

It can be as simple as
    ·       Waiting for the right mood
    ·       Waiting for the right time

Then look at the way you organize your work. You may notice other reasons for procrastination like
    ·       Lack of clear goals
    ·       Underestimating the difficulty of the tasks
    ·       Underestimating the time required to complete the tasks
    ·       Unclear standards for the task outcomes
    ·       Feeling as the tasks are imposed on you from outside
    ·       Too ambiguous tasks

And there are also many connections with
    ·       Underdeveloped decision making skills
    ·       Fear of failure or fear of success
    ·       Perfectionism

Procrastination – adds stress – Stress often comes from things that we are not doing anything about! Procrastination also leads to negative emotions such as guilt and negative self-esteem – JUST DO IT!

Here is a little more food for thought when thinking about our listening skills.

Test Your Listening Habits -   from Michael Olivers Book -

Here is a short test that will give you an idea of your own Listening Habits  –

When you’re listening to someone :

1- Do you think of other things while you’re keeping track of the conversation  ?           Y —  N

2- Do you think about what you’re going to say next  ?   Y      N

3- Do you listen with the intent to reply rather than with the intent to understand ?        Y     N

4- Do you break in with your own ideas before the other person has finished talking ?     Y….N

5- Do you listen primarily to facts rather than ideas  ?        Y….N

6- Do you " tune out " to things that you feel will be too difficult to understand  ?            Y….N

7- Do you try to make it appear you’re paying attention when you’re not   ?                    Y….N

8- Do certain words or phrases prejudice you so that you don’t listen objectively  ?         Y….N

9- Do your thoughts turn to other things when you believe a speaker will have
nothing particularly interesting to say  ?          Y….N

    10- Do you finish other people’s sentences  ?      Y….N

11 Can you tell from a person’s  appearance and delivery that he/she won’t have
anything important to say  ?       Y….N

12- Are you distracted by outside sights and sounds  ?      Y….N

If you answered NO to all of these questions, you are one of a kind !
Good listening habits can be learned !

Thanks for attending.  YOUR participation makes these workshops effective.

What a great event.  Tom "Big Al" Schreiter shared some killer 1st sentences for starting a conversation, starting a presentation, closing a presentation.

Here are some pictures from the event.

The next meetup has already been scheduled.  Mark Davis will be the guest.

In order to build a successful business, we’ve got to keep learning new skills.  The Houston Network Marketing Meetup Group is a great way to do that without being pitched on someone else’s ‘deal’.

See you at the next event.

    The One Minute Presentation

Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone we invited to an opportunity meeting actually showed up, eager and ready to take action?

Let’s look at where that system is breaking down. It’s before we ever get to the presentation meeting

We spend too much time trying to convince unqualified people to join
It is not true that every one breathing on their own, who has a pulse – is a prospect We do the show up and throw up system – too much information.

What do you NOT need in your 1 Minute presentation:

    1. The Company P&L statement
    2. Who is the President
    3. If you were the 33rd fastest growing company anywhere
    4. How many millions of dollars in sales the company did.
    5. What percentage of growth the company had last quarter
    6. Details on the comp plan.
    7. How many colors/sizes/features/prices/bps/cvs, etc
    8. How much time and money is spent on the quality assurance
    9. Money back guarantee
    10. The corporate Jet, building, # of customer service reps

Here are some questions prospects WANT to know:

    1. What do I have to do?
    2. Tell me a little about the product or service
    3. Is it reasonably priced
    4. Will others want this?
    5. Can I do it?
(Watch your terms- linear, residual – consider using on-going until you explain “Rock and Roll” income or “Mailbox” money. All the things a prospect does not need to know in a 1 minute presentation is something they should get as "training")

If you start with the attitude that …. here’s the facts…. that’s it.  Then the decision is up to the prospect.

Many prospects think they must become a salesperson to do Network Marketing, when in truth Network Marketing is about building relationships, referring and recommending…… not "pitching, pushing, prodding, convincing, or selling".

So, here’s the format for the 1 Minute Presentation:

    1.  Let your prospect know they do not need to change.  The prospect does not have to become something he/she is not,  just continue to refer and recommend just like they always have – movies, books, shopping, etc….

    2. Let your prospect know WHAT your company has to offer, for multiple services or products, just give them 2-3 ideas based on the ones you like and ask if they think they could find however many they liked and feel comfortable recommending those?  Remember that we do not all have to like the same things.

    3. Ask your prospect if between everybody they talk to and everybody they talk to, so on and so on, does your prospect think with your help and your team’s system that they might could find X number of people who looked forward to using Company ABC’s products/services on a regular basis?

If the prospect leans forward and says ”tell me more", then you can take one of several paths:

    1. Ask questions such as:  What would you like to know – don’t assume you know

    what they want to know.

    2.  LOAN the prospect a third party tool, like your company DVD, CD, Magazine (let the person know you will need to get the ‘tool’ back from them within a reasonable period of time)

    3.  Invite them to the ‘training’ session that is coming up (you know -  that presentation meeting).

If the prospect says "no", then leave him/her alone.  No need to spend time trying to convince someone to be interested.  Remember, we can’t ‘make’ someone want to have a dream or see the vision in Network Marketing that we do.

Thanks to everyone who came for making it a great, interactive Meetup.

Thanks to all the Houston Network Marketing Meetup members for attending and a special "Thanks, Big Al", for inviting the Meetup group to attend your "Magic Sequences of Words" workshop.

Those who attended learned WHY and HOW to use some seemingly ordinary but actually mind bending sequences of words:

Would it be ok if …
    If – Then
    Most People ..
    Everybody Knows
    Everybody Says
So what is going to be easier for you?

As Big Al recommended, if we start working these key phrases into our everyday conversations, they will become so natural we won’t even realize we are manipulating the subconscious minds of others ALL the time.

Those who attended the Houston Network Marketing Meetup Thursday evening learned a valuable technique when ‘listening’ to others.

If you would like the notes Shari used during the presentation, click here and save to your computer.  Click here for a ‘completed color chart’.

Good questions to ask in helping you determine a person’s personality:

    1. What type of work do you do? What do you like best about it?

What do you like least about it?  G Y B R

    2. What is the most fun thing you do in your normal day?  G Y B R

    3. What would be your ideal way to earn a living?  G Y B R

    4. Tell me about your level of self-confidence? G Y B R

    5. Tell me about your closest friend. G Y B R

    6. Are you more of a people-person or are you more comfortable being by yourself?
    G Y B R

    7. Tell me how you make decisions? (What process do you go thru?) G Y B R

There are also other resources available that can help us go from learning that this ’secret language’ exists to near mastery.  However, as Tom “Big Al” Schreiter says, if you can get it right 50% of the time, that’s good too.

You might want to add this to your Network Marketing Skills library.

    image
    From Tom “Big Al’s” site.
(clicking will take you directly to his site)
Learn the secret language of prospects, that INSTANTLY goes to their minds and to their hearts . . . so that you can say just a few sentences and your prospects will want to join!

There is also a 100 page E-Book available.  Contact Jennifer Fisher, for details.

Please note the Organizers do NOT receive any financial benefit from the sales of any skills tools from any source.

Thanks to everyone who attended the Meetup on May 28th, 2009.  We had a great workshop talking about the Secret Language of our Prospects and after wards got to test what we had learned on each other.  If you haven’t made it to one of the meetups yet, I strongly encourage you to come out.

If you’re not a member of the Houston Network Marketing Meetup Group yet, we’re a Generic group of Network Marketers, all in our own companies, so we don’t come together to pitch each other our deal.  However, we all understand the importance of learning new skills and keeping those we already know tuned up.
